Frequently Asked Questions
- Why is The GPS Guardian™ much more affordable
than other devices on the market?
Our parent company has been distributing GPS location devices to protect
assets for car dealers, lenders & banks for almost a decade. Due to our
experience and buying power we believe that this technology should be affordable for everyone.
- How does The GPS Guardian™ work?
The GPS Guardian™ is a GPS location system which enables you to find
virtually anything, anytime via the internet.

Registering is quick and easy! All you have to do is go to
www.thegpsguardian.com, click on the “Registration” link, follow a few
simple steps, and you will have a fully functioning, easy-to-use GPS
Guardian® Personal Locator!
- How do I use my GPS Guardian™?
Looking up the location of a GPS Guardian® Personal Locator is easy
enough for any user and convenient enough to do from almost anywhere!
You can look up the unit’s location at www.thegpsguardian.com from your
computer or at mobile.thegpsguardian.com from an Internet-enabled mobile
device, such as a cellular phone or PDA. And if you want to look up your
unit’s location but don’t have Internet access, don’t worry. You can
dial (800) GPS-6590 and have our staff locate your device.
- Do I need to buy anything else?
No - once you have purchased The GPS Guardian ™ device and have
registered your details on the The GPS Guardian ™ website, you’re good
to go. The only additional things you may wish to buy are extra credits
or additional years of service at the end of your pre-paid service plan.
- Are there any monthly or quarterly fees? How
long does the service last?
There are no monthly or quarterly service fees. The GPS Guardian™ comes
with a pre-paid service plan included in the price of the system. The
service plans include a number of credits, which are used to locate your
device, send commands and receive High Priority Notification (HPN)
alerts.
We will notify you by email if the number of credits in your account is
running low (when the balance is at 10 credits). You can buy more
credits from the The GPS Guardian™ website using your credit or debit
card.
At the end of your service plan term, you can easily extend the coverage
period for an additional fee.
Please note that
It is mandatory that at least 1 credit is
used on each device on your account within any 18 month period to avoid
the expiration of the Wireless Services used to communicate with the
device. Failure to use at least 1 credit within this period will result
in the immediate expiration of the Wireless Communication Services and
will not be eligible for reactivation or renewal.
- How long will the The GPS Guardian™ battery
last before recharging?
Depending on how often you locate the device, the battery is designed to
last up to 5 days before needing a recharge.
- Is there a limit to the number of times a
device can be tracked, or commands sent to and information received from
the system?
No. Provided that you have sufficient credits in your account, you can
locate your vehicle or send commands to and receive information from the
The GPS Guardian™ system as often as you like.
- How do I buy additional credits?
Just log in to your account on the The GPS Guardian™ website, click on
“Buy More Credits” and use your credit or debit card.
- How do I know when I am running out of
credits?
You can see the number of credits you have remaining when you log into
your account. We will notify you by email if the number of credits in
your account is running low (when the balance is at 10 credits).
- How do I create a user account?
When you purchase The GPS Guardian™, you register a username & password
together with the device ID number. You use the username and password
every time you visit the The GPS Guardian™ website. You can change the
username and password whenever you like.
Enter your username and password. You will be asked to provide some
other information (including name, address, phone numbers so that the
device can be registered to you.
You will also be asked to provide the answer to a security question that
can be used for identity verification if you need to call The GPS
Guardian™ for assistance.
At this point, you can also nominate up to two email-enabled devices (eg
cell phone, PDA, PC) to receive High Priority Notification (HPN) alerts
such as Geofence breached or Excess Speed Alert. (See the answer below
on how to select devices for HPN alerts).
Then read though the Terms & Conditions, click to accept them, and you
can start using the system immediately – to get the location of your
vehicle, or send other commands to the unit (such as Set Geofence,
Excess Speed alerts, SOS, etc).
- How do I access my account on the website?
After you first visit the The GPS Guardian™ website (when you complete
the registration process described above), every time you visit the
website thereafter, simply log in using your username and password, and
use the device immediately.
- What if I forget my username or password?
Click on “Forgot Username” or “Forgot Password” on the login page. You
will be asked for the email address you used when you provided the
account registration information, and your username or password will be
emailed to you.
If you have forgotten both your username and password, please call us on
1-800-GPS-6590 and we will ask your security question before sending
your username and password to you by email.
- Can I have more than one device on my account?
Yes. If you buy multiple The GPS Guardian™ devices, you register them
all to your account and nominate either the same (or different) High
Priority Notification (HPN) device(s) for each one. Then, when you visit
the The GPS Guardian™ website subsequently, you can select which device
you wish to locate or send other commands to.
- How do I select devices to receive High
Priority Notification (HPN) alerts?
First, log into your account. Click on your Device ID or (if you have
more than one device on your account) click on the device that you wish
to receive High Priority Notification (HPN) alerts. Then select the
email-enabled device(s) that you wish to receive HPN alerts.
For each device, you should give an email address that serves as the HPN
contact. One of these should be your cell phone.
- What if I don’t have an Internet connection?
You will be unable to use the full range of functions offered by The GPS
Guardian™. However, if you need to assistance, you can call
1-800-GPS-6590, and one of our telephone representatives will locate
your device for you.
- Can my device be located while it is in
motion?
Yes. When you locate your device, you will also receive details of the
speed and direction in which it is traveling.
- What is the The GPS Guardian™ coverage area?
The widest coverage of any GPS system – bar none – for two reasons:
The GPS Guardian™ communicates with the towers of multiple mobile
carriers in the US, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Competitive GPS
location systems are generally restricted to the coverage area of one
cellular provider.
The GPS Guardian™ communicates via SMS (Short Message Service), which
has the same coverage area as voice. Most competitive systems
communicate by General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), which has a
significantly smaller coverage area.
In short, The GPS Guardian™ can operate reliably in places where
competitive systems cannot – principally non-urban areas. We also
communicate reliably in big cities, where very high cellular usage puts
pressure on carriers’ networks.
- How will I know if there is no cellular signal
– and what happens?
Our unrivalled coverage means that you can locate, send commands to and
receive information from The GPS Guardian™ in more places than other GPS
location systems. However, there are some rural areas where even The GPS
Guardian™ can’t get a signal – because there is no cellular service at
all – for example, in some of the more isolated mountainous areas.
If you try to locate your vehicle or send another type of command to
your vehicle, the following message will appear on the Web page - “This
device may be outside of a cellular coverage area. You should expect to
receive a High Priority Notification alert on your nominated device when
your vehicle returns to cellular coverage”.
When your device returns to cellular coverage (and provided that it does
so within 24 hours from the time of the last attempt to communicate with
the unit), a High Priority Notification (HPN) alert will be sent to your
nominated device.
- How will I know if the GPS antenna can’t see
the sky – and what happens?
If the GPS antenna can’t get a clear view of the sky, but is within
cellular coverage, the system will show the last known location of the
device before the antenna’s view of the sky became obscured (eg by heavy
tree-cover or by being in an underground or enclosed parking garage).
- What happens if there is no cellular signal
AND the GPS antenna can’t see the sky?
Once again, The GPS Guardian’s superior coverage means that instances of
this are very rare. However, in such cases, if you try to locate your
vehicle or send another type of command to your vehicle, the following
message will appear on the web page – “This device may be outside of a
cellular coverage area. ”
- How accurately can The GPS Guardian™ pinpoint
my location?
Usually, within 30 feet of its exact position – often as close as 3
feet. Geographical location is provided by the GPS part of the system
communicating with multiple satellites in space. Sometimes, if the
vehicle is in a location where the antenna cannot get a “full view” of
the sky (for example, where it is partially obscured by tree-cover) the
system will receive information from a smaller number of satellites than
usual. This will result in a less accurate geographical positioning – to
within a few hundred feet of its exact location.
- How long does it take to get a location?
Exact tracking time depends on the speed of your Internet connection. If
you have a broadband Internet connection, it takes between 10 and 60
seconds, and usually around 30 seconds. If you have a dial-up Internet
connection or are accessing the Web via a cellular device, it may take
longer.
- What if nothing appears on the page when I try
to get a location?
If a new location map does not appear within 2 minutes and 30 seconds,
or if you can’t send commands or receive messages, it may be because of
a problem with your Web browser or Internet connection, unrelated to the
The GPS Guardian™ website or device. If there is a problem with your
browser or Internet connection, we suggest that you click on the “back”
button and then the “forward” button in your menu bar. If this does not
resolve the issue, we suggest that you wait another minute or two, and
try again.
- How do I use the SOS button?
If you press the SOS button for more than 5 seconds, the device will
send a High Priority alert.
- Where can I buy The GPS Guardian™ ?
The GPS Guardian™ is available from authorized dealers throughout the
United States or may be purchased online at www.thegpsguardian.com. To
find a dealer in your area, please call 1-800-GPS-6590 and we will be
happy to assist you.
- Can I buy The GPS Guardian™ for my vehicles &
equipment?
Yes. Please call 1-800-GPS-6590 and we will help you locate your nearest
participating dealer.
- Will I receive an insurance discount if I have
a The GPS Guardian™?
Many insurance companies offer a discount of up to 35% off the cost of
the comprehensive part of an insurance policy for vehicles equipped with
a vehicle location system. The exact amount of discount varies according
to where you live and which company provides your insurance. You should
contact your insurance provider for more information.
- What is the Warranty on the device?

replacement or repair in the unlikely event that the unit does not work
properly.
